“Cigarette?”
―French cigarette girl

A cigarette (from the French cigarette, "small cigar") is a small cylinder of finely cut tobacco leaves rolled in thin paper for smoking. Many characters in the film are shown smoking.

Description[]

Cigarettes are items made of paper rolled in a cylindrical form, with ground dried and cured tobacco inside the roll. Some cigarettes are thin while others are more thick. Cotton filters are sometimes used.

In Inglourious Basterds[]

Barring a few exceptions, almost all important characters in the film smoke cigarettes or at the very least cigars.

Many types of cigarettes are seen in the film. Various cigarette brands are seen, such as Red Apple, Alpin, Lyonnaises, Harz, Deutscher Geist, Overstolz, etc. Accessories, such as the cigarette holder, is seen being used by Bridget von Hammersmark. Ashtrays are seen in most places.

Trivia[]

  • In real life, the Nazi Party was among the first governmental organizations (they weren't the very first as it's generally claimed) to push for anti-smoking measures. Adolf Hitler was a heavy smoker in his youth, but gave up the habit, considering it "a waste of money", and later "decadent". Hitler disapproved of most of his inner circle smoking habit, especially those of Eva Braun, Martin Bormann, Hermann Göring, and also disapproved of the military personnel's freedom to smoke.
