Italy

Italy (Italian: Italia [iˈtaːlja]), officially the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica italiana), is a unitary parliamentary republic in Southern Europe. To the north, Italy borders France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, and is approximately delimited by the Alpine watershed, enclosing the Po Valley and the Venetian Plain. To the south, it consists of the entirety of the Italian Peninsula and the two Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia, in addition to many smaller islands.

In Inglourious Basterds

Lt. Aldo Raine mentioned that he fought in Sicily, before recruiting the Basterds. Italy is seen in the film on Hitler's map from his lair.

Frederick Zoller killed 300 enemy soldiers in a fortified city located in Sicily, exploits turned into a film, Nation's Pride.

Aldo, Donny and Omar pose as Bridget von Hammersmark's Italian escort and cameramen during Operation Kino, to gain access to the film premiere and assassinate Hitler, Goebbels, Bormann, Göring and most of the German High Command.

Trivia

• Set in "Sicily", the Nation's Pride was shot on Untermarkt and Obermarkt in the old town of Görlitz, about 64 km N-E of Bad Schandau, on the border with Poland.
• While not specified in the film, it's possible that Aldo knows Italian because he might have also be of Italian descent, and grew up in an Italian speaking family in the Appalachian mountains. While Donny could also have grew up in an Italian-Jewish family, it's more likely that he learnt a bit of Italian from living in New York among various Italian immigrants.
