“So, Emmanuelle, how did you like "Lucky Kids"?”
Joseph Goebbels

Lucky Kids (German: Glückskinder) is a 1936 German romantic comedy film directed by Paul Martin and starring Lilian Harvey, Willy Fritsch and Paul Kemp.

Plot[]

Journalist Gil Taylor has to write a report about the night court, when Ann Gardens case is heard. The young lady seems to be homeless. Gil tries to help her. That's when trouble starts.

In Inglourious Basterds[]

In a deleted scene from the lunch in Chapter Three, Fredrick Zoller suggests to Goebbels that they screen "Lucky Kids" as a test screening to decide whether or not Emmanuelle Mimieux/Shosanna Dreyfus's cinema, Le Gamaar, is suitable for the premiere of Stolz der Nation. Goebbels remarks that it was the most fun he had on a production and what he will likely most be remembered for. Later in the theatrical cut, Marcel sees Shosanna, Goebbels, and others walk out of the cinema. When asked by Goebbels, Shosanna remarks that she enjoyed Lillian Harvey in the film, angering Goebbels, who tells her to never mention that name again.

Trivia[]

  • Lilian Harvey's duet with Willy Fritsch from Lucky Kids, "Ich wollt' ich wär ein Huhn" can be heard playing on a phonograph in the La Louisiane tavern, as well as in the extended "Lunch With Goebbels" scene.
  • In the Lucky Kids film, the main character Gil Taylor takes care of a young homeless girl named Ann, who keeps her true identity secret, and ends up marrying her. This is mirrored in the film with Shosanna and Marcel as a couple and Shosanna hiding her true identity.
